A commercial BiZnB oxide glass powder is mixed with up to 50 wt% Agi or 20 wt% of Agl-MOR, pressed and densified at 500°C, resulting in minimal Agi loss due to volatilization. Initial leach testing for iodine solubility indicated that levels below 1 micromole/liter can be achieved. Further research is in progress to determine solubility of the other components. The two primary phases identified were Agi and a bismuth oxide phase, either γ-Βΐ2θ3, or more likely BÍ3sZn058. The microstructure of the sample is shown in the SEM image in Figure 5. The Agi particles are -25μπι in size and are surrounded by a matrix of the crystallized Glass A, the lighter regions of which are the bismuth oxide phase. 13 These cracks are most likely the cause of the small amount of open porosity measured using the Archimedes method.
